Daterra Masterpiece Coaracy
My Friend's CoffeeRum Baba, Mango, Spiced Pear
Daterra Masterpieces are auction-lot coffees produced by one of the best farms in Brazil—Daterra. They feature rare varietals, unusual processes, and scale-busting cupping scores. Masterpiece coffees will never be produced again. They're only available at Daterra's annual auction, where roasters from across the globe compete to nab lots. Most end up overseas—places like Japan, Korea, and China. The few that make it stateside tend to cause coffee-geek stampedes.
This lot is called Coaracy. The varietal is Ceuci, a lineage of Arara (don't beat yourself up if you don't recognize those names; they're pretty damn rare). It was put through 40 hours of anaerobic natural fermentation, and it pulled a whopping 90.1 score on Daterra's cupping table. If you're unfamiliar with cupping scores, that translates to... insanely f*ing high.
Rum Baba is written all over this guy. It's a killer combo of cakelike decadence and boozy splendor. Spiced pear hangs around, too. Between that and the Rum Baba, the cup drinks like a liquefied dessert. The sweet spice creates an unlikely canvas for tropical fruit—mango in particular. As the cup cools, fans of the Masterpiece category will be delighted by the je ne sais quoi grace note that seems to be a Masterpiece signature.
Finally, a philosophical note about this and other Masterpieces:
In a world where a million things compete for your attention, there's something special about a Masterpiece. It's not just that its cup qualities are stellar; it's that it will never be produced again. Knowing that is its own kind of flavor note. So, grab a bag, ready your gooseneck, and pay attention. Because, like this moment, this Masterpiece will never happen again.
