Raspberry Jam, Cranberry Juice, Orange

Ethiopia plays home to more amazing coffees than state fairs do opportunities for digestive regret. Still, within Ethiopia, the name Daye Bensa looms large. Daye Bensa is one of the origin's most prominent companies, the toast of Ethiopia's Cup of Excellence, taking top slots year after year after year (last year, they took home silver). But even among their reliably exceptional offerings, this brew stands out. It comes from the Bombe village, which is fitting because it brews a big, beautiful fruit bomb.

Raspberry jam is the band leader here. It's vibrant, bright, and about as subtle as a Vegas slot. I also find it a welcome headliner because unlike some other berries—I'm looking at you blue—raspberry packs some lively acidity. Playing sidekick is a great hit of cranberry juice. It's a special note, if only for its rarity. Cranberry is ubiquitous in Kenya, but in Ethiopian coffee, there's nary a cran to berry. It lends a slightly tart edge to the brew, and some welcome tannins, too. And I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the note of orange in this guy, another cool addition you don't often catch in dry Ethiopian coffees.
