Ethiopia Daye Bensa Dukamo Rumudamo
My Friend's CoffeeJasmine, Lily, Apricot, Bubble Gum
This is a big deal coffee. The grandchild—if such a thing exists—of a brew that took top prize at the Cup of Excellence. It's got more florals than a New Year's float, and it hails from Rumudamo, a farm and processing operation in Bensa, Sidama. It also comes from Daye Bensa, a Wonka-like outfit that's made a pastime of winning coffee competitions.
From the moment the beans hit the grinder, the florals are over the top. The dry fragrance lands in a jasmine space, and that note carries from the wet aroma to the cup. There's also some lily involved as an aromatic and flavor. Riding sidecar to the florals is a lovely note of apricot. I'm a sucker for stonefruit in Ethiopian brews, and this one had me weak in the knees. And, not to be overshadowed, a subtle hit of Bubblegum emerges as the cup cools.
The overall impression of this brew is bright and sparkly with oodles of sweetness. Geisha-like is one way to describe it. Showstopping would be another. But it would be easiest just to say it's really good. You should grab a bag.
