Cherry, Strawberry, Dark Chocolate

If you're convinced that Ethiopia is the only origin for a killer dry process, this Rwandan Natural will be happy to disabuse you of the notion. This coffee is one hundred percent Red Bourbon, which would be exciting enough, but the real draw here is that it comes from the Muhororo Washing Station.

Muhororo is one of just a couple outfits established by Celestin Rumenerangabo, a figure who started in the Rwandan coffee industry in the 1970s at age fourteen. Through force of will, he built one of the origin's best coffee operations, then saw it decimated in the 90s, during the country's genocide. Celestin fled, took shelter afar, bided his time. When the fighting passed, he returned home and rebuilt his operation, opening two washing stations in the process, one of which is Muhororo. The Muhororo station's coffees are just spectacular; one sip of the coffee offered here makes that abundantly clear. And knowing the history makes the cup all the more spectacular.

The big flavor note in this one is cherry, a snappy version of the summertime fruit. A dose of strawberry plays sidekick, which, combined with the cherry, makes for a deep, resonant fruit impression. Dark chocolate makes for a foundational presence, offering a sturdy base for the lighter acidity and sweetness. It's a brew worthy of your appreciation and your v60s fluting.
