Costa Rica Hacienda Sonora Geisha Anaerobic
My Friend's CoffeeKern's Grapefruit Nectar, Sprite, Raspberry, Brown Sugar
In the world of rare coffees, Geisha (or Gesha, depending upon your fondness for vowels) has gained a cult following. It packs bombastic floral notes, wallops of citrus, and candy sweetness. And within the world of Geisha coffees, certain offerings deserve blue-chip status. Count this showstopper from Costa Rica's Hacienda Sonora farm among that hallowed class.
This Geisha is an anaerobic, which means the coffee underwent a period of oxygen deprivation during fermentation. You might be wondering how, exactly, oxygen deprivation expresses itself in the cup. The answer is that it creates a heavier mouthfeel and amps fermented notes. You catch things like wine in anaerobics, sometimes bourbon or rum, and the fruit shifts into Starburst gear. Anaerobics are, in other words, Rambo brews, cups with big, oily biceps and unholy amounts of ammunition. This one has a massive hit of a grapefruit, but it's unusual in that it plays think and velvety, almost like Kern's nectar. That's odd considering Kern's doesn't make a grapefruit flavor, but why tether ourselves to the myopic leanings of the brass at Kern's? There's also a sweet, citrusy hit of sprite, some raspberry, and on the cool, a nice spoonful of brown sugar. If you've been looking for a dry Geisha, this is your bag. Get it will it lasts!
