Strawberry Soda, Papaya, Apricot, Meyer Lemon

"Whoa" is admittedly not a tasting note, but it's the top-most word on our cupping pad for this sun dried stunner from Ethiopia. The ink that follows outlines more traditional tones of fruit and sweetness, but let's focus for a moment on that "whoa," because it's not the kind of thing that graces cupping notes often. When it does, you can pretty much skip the rest of the wordage—the "whoa" tells you everything you need to know.

Brewed as pour over, this one buckles knees. It packs more fruit than a produce section and delivers the goods with courier finesse. Strawberries stand out, but not the fresh picked variety; instead, they ride a creamy effervescence that smacks of old school fruit sodas. Backing up the note are hits of papaya and apricot. They mingle in the effortless manner of a pie filling, and they're accompanied by a bracing dash of meyer lemon on the finish.

The cup quality here is sublimely suggestive of its origin, but it's worth noting that this brew doesn't just hail from Ethiopia. It comes from Sidama, a growing zone so talented it produced over half of the top ten finishers at last year's Cup of Excellence.  This coffee explains its dominance. It's a fruit bomb, sure, but it's depth is oceanic and its complexity could warrant academic analysis.
