Peru Organic Generative Cecanor
My Friend's CoffeeGreen Apple, Sesame, Milk Chocolate, Lemon Curd
This killer washed process comes from the Cecanor cooperative in Northern Peru, and man does it rep the origin with style. Cecanor—which is an abbreviation of Central de Cafetaleros del Nororiente—pulled from more than 70 communities to create this lot. The coffee comes from postage-stamp-sized farms, with producers committed to organic practices.
At its best, Peruvian coffee is clean and balanced, with mild acidity and nice heft. This coffee hits all of those marks with an asterisk: a sparkling quality that hearkens to some lovely malic and citric acid.
Green apple is the dominant note, bracing and lively. It's a bit of an iconoclastic opener for a cup from Peru, but notes of sesame and milk chocolate act as a counterweight. The cup settles into a classic medium body as it cools, and the cleanliness of the washed processing really shines. Finally, a bit of lemon curd rises to the fore, lending yet another dash of iconoclastic sparkle. The end result is a cup that's balanced enough to be a daily driver, but special enough to be a real treat.
